iPhone apps I’ll most likely download on day one

Below is a list of apps that I’ll almost definitely download on day one of the iPhone App Store.

Twitterific

I’m probably considered a Twitterholic, so having a true standalone Twitter client on the phone should be fairly awesome. However, I wonder how the teams involved might handle the multiple requests issue that occurs when a user inadvertently has multiple Twitterific instances running (on multiple machines). Either way, I’m not terribly fond of any of the web-based clients for the iPhone and considering they won an ADA for it, it should be worth the download.

NetNewsWire

NetNewsWire’s one of those few apps that I launch upon booting up. I’ve tried GoogleReader across the board and hated it. I’ve tried NewsGator’s web-based client and wasn’t terribly thrilled with it. From what I’ve heard about the new NNW for iPhone, it seems like it’ll be fairly bare-bones which should prove to be a nice feature.

OmniFocus

Another ADA iPhone winner, a good strong notes/list application has been blatantly missing from the iPhone since that Notes app doesn’t sync with anything. I’d used its sibling, OmniOutliner, in the past as part of the kGTD implementation and it seemed fully featured. I’m very excited that it will sync with a local DB so I can have all of my info everywhere. Too bad you can’t delete the built-in apps that use Marker Felt by default from the home screen :-(

An AIM client

In the wake of the iPhone 3G announcement and the sort-of let-down that came with there being no built-in video chat (man, that would’ve really been the future here & now) or new iChat icon on the home screen, I’m looking for a standalone IM client (one that includes AIM support). I know AOL demoed a standalone client during the March iPhone Roadmap show, but I haven’t heard much more about it. I’d really like to see the folks behind Adium port their client to the iPhone, as it’s my client of choice when I don’t have video capability.

There you have it. Three concrete apps that will probably sit inside the App Store’s Top 5 for a very long time, and one genre that will most likely also exist, but that I know less about. Whether it’s 3G or Edge, the iPhone will be 2.0 when it can, and the above apps are why.
