Hippie Motherlode!

Wow.. In looking for a downloadable copy of Today in Phish History (4/6/92, one of my favorite tapes of all time), I came across a link from Phish.net that I had never come across before: the Phish Downloads Spreadsheet.

Back in the olden days when I used to tape shows and trade tapes over listservs, I used to peruse people’s tape lists and see if they had some nugget I was looking for. Then things began going more and more digital, and then the band began selling their own shows on CD (and now digitally literally hours after the show has finished), and taping has sort of become a thing of the past. Listening, however, is still here and now, and now that I’ve found this ridiculous treasure trove of memories, I can dig in to some juicy tidbits that left when I gave away all my analog tapes in 2006.

  1. Seems like your RSS feed just started updating after a bit of a hiatus. Anyway, the spreadsheet is great, especially the page of remasters. Some of those are outstanding. The only things I don’t like about the spreadsheet are that they don’t tell you which source they’re using and don’t link to lossless versions.

I still have all of my tapes in the crawl space, although I recently gave away all of my burned CDs to free up one of my racks for kids movies.

  2. You mean, “seems like you started using your site again”! I tried Tumblr out for a while and then got nervous when they had all of their downtime (oh crap… people can’t see that I’m not blogging!), so I moved everything back over here to WordPress.

But you’re right… no source info up front is annoying (although it usually is in the notes w/ the files), but it’s not like you’re paying for this stuff, so if it’s a lousy tape, I’ll chuck it. More often than not, it beats wobbly analog in the deck of my Explorer, so I’m enjoying it.
